Brain: Your lawn mower is electric. (Boogie woogie woogie)
Me: Brain, I will kill you with so much beer (as Wil Wheaton said).
Brain (smug): But you don't have any beer.
Me (determined): I have cider, Madeira, and wine. I will punish you.
Brain (defeated): I see.
Me: Now say you're sorry, or I'll make you wish you had two livers at your disposal.
Brain: .... Two livers, disposal. Nice.
Me: I will chug a glass of Madeira right now.
Brain: Sorry! No more line dancing references.
Me: Thank you. I'm surprised at you, Brain. You know how we feel about that song.

That last post was via my phone from work. New phone, new service provider, and livejournal works on it, which is cool. It's been months since my last real posting, and at this point, I'm really just using it for some of the webcomics which post to it.

Back in the old hometown, we were more partial to the cod-slapping dance, but anyone in superb physical condition with no shame can polka.

Potentially there are enough coconuts to float a crude raft. My only fear is wild sea monkeys, but you rarely get them this far north.

I've used driftwood & detritus to construct crude sonar torpedoes & wire guided harpoons. Now to build a raft! My priorities may need work.

09:32 pm - They do not make things like they used to.
I know this because I spent this afternoon dismantling the top half of a tensile testing apparatus that was 50 years old. Lots of parts and intricate stuff, but the main feature that made it a relic? That would be the quarter inch thick steel casing. That's right, I could safely stand behind this thing down-range of most small caliber firearms.

The unit we've been using is perhaps a tenth of the size, weighs about 2 pounds, and it hooks into a 50,000 lb load cell. Yay, digital tech. Oh, and we're probably keeping the bottom half of this monstrosity around just to use as a bench. Heck, I was standing behind it at the end of the day and my boss asked me for a beer. It's the perfect bar height.

09:08 am - Mad Science T-shirts
http://www.printfection.com/retro-future
I ran across this site, and I want to order a bunch of swag so I can justifiably shout, "They thought I was MAD at the academy, but wait til those fools are over-run by my army of cyborg hamsters! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Other side affects may include egomania, uncontrollable giggling, and attempts at overthrowing the establishment. Do not use in front of kittens, puppies or other object producing difficult-to-remove stains when broken.

03:15 pm - According to my calculations....
... my unemployment benefits will run out around the 24th of May. I think if I sub-teach enough I can extend the benefits, it just depends how many teachers get the flu.
If I don't have a job when stuff runs out, I suppose burger flipping is not beneath me. (Did that sound elitist? Oh well.)

09:26 am - Writer's Block: Gone but Not Forgotten

Many beloved television shows are no longer with us, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Six Feet Under, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. What defunct television show do you miss the most?

Firefly. I know Pushing Daisies is still on, but I'm not sure how much longer it gets to stay. I know The Middleman hasn't been cancelled yet, but they haven't ordered anymore episodes and that's not a good sign.

02:32 pm - Jobless, Week 1
It's been one week, and I haven't had an interview yet. Color me perturbed, but things are not progressing as hoped. I get about a call a day from recruiters. The one I talked to today was literally phoning it in: reading every question from a form, not attempting to build a relationship at all.
Careerbuilder seems to be a magnet for recruiters. I'm keeping track of who calls me and where they found me. To demonstrate how fully committed I am to finding a job, I've been tracking basically every move in a large spreadsheet.
I am certainly down right now, but by no means out of it just yet. Despite the fact that there appear to be hiring freezes at some fo the companies I spoke to yesterday, I will remain optimistic until my severance runs out. At that point, I will more seriously consider relocating.
I just wish the recruiters would call me about jobs in this area, instead of IOWA.
